Today were looking at the very basics.
It is a mechanical device that takes the mechanical energy it produces and converts it into electrical power.
There are several different types of mechanical devices that can produce electrical power, in other words electricity. There are also different sources of energy to drive the mechanical device, so it can produce electricity.
Without these mechanical devices are homes, businesses, factories, cities and the world would not have electricity.
Two of the most popular mechanical devices to produce electricity are turbines and combustion engines. For now let’s look at turbines and the different types of energy sources used to drive the turbine. It can range from water, wind, solar, steam and fossil fuels to name a few.
Even though the mechanical device is called a turbine, it does not mean that the various types of turbines are identical or all look the same. They have the basic mechanical principals of a rotary device, which is a shaft with attached blades that rotate; sometimes it is called an engine.
Today we are looking at gas turbines that use various types of fuel in basic term to rotate the turbine. Of course, there is much more to gas turbines then just the engine, there are many mechanical parts that make up the design of a complete gas turbine. Another name for a gas turbine is a combustion turbine. Some of the various fuels are natural gas, diesel, kerosene, propane, bio-diesel and bio-gas.
In chapter 2 we will explore the various applications and industries that use gas turbines. In other chapters we will discuss how a gas turbine operates and the technical details. Some of the manufactures and models on the market today.
